Late-Night Sewage Backup in Fort Worth, TX
Category 3 Water Loss, same-crew mitigation through reconstruction.
The Challenge
During a heavy rain event, a collapsed section of the original cast-iron sewer lateral caused the city main to surcharge back up through the hall bath tub and toilet of a 1920s historic home. It was a Category 3 loss affecting about 600 sq ft, plus contamination dripping into the crawlspace below.
The Approach
Full PPE and containment were in place from the first minute, with a 6-mil critical barrier and negative air holding pressure so nothing migrated into the clean side of the house. Contaminated porous materials were removed, but the home's original 1927 longleaf pine flooring in the hallway, material that cannot be bought today, was separated from the contaminated zone with a hard line, documented for the adjuster, and dried in place with floor drying mats instead of torn out. The plumber's spot repair on the lateral was coordinated with the city inspection so trenching, backfill, and reinstall didn't conflict.
The Results
Dry standard was reached in 5 days, with full reconstruction complete in 11. The original 1927 pine flooring was preserved, and the family of four was back in the house in under a week.
